Social Media and Hollywood’s Response to Trump’s Immigration Ban

By Tracey Bakun News

In response to President Trump’s executive order restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, crowds gathered at airports around the country to protest this weekend.  At LAX, demonstrators came together in support of diversity, chanting “Let them in!” and “Love, not hate, makes America great.”

Trump’s presidency has already spurred nationwide protests and mobilizations amongst those who disagree with his extreme policies and political stances. However, in addition to these in-person marches and demonstrations, social media and Hollywood have assumed pivotal roles when it comes to initiating conversations around various social issues and topics.

Social media has been empowering individuals and organizations all over the world to come together and #resist. The use of hashtags has become monumental to anti-Trump protests, spreading messages like wildfire across social communities and the internet. For instance, images from Women’s Marches all over the globe went viral last week, emphasizing the reach and breadth of the movement and bringing together gender equality proponents from different nations and backgrounds.

Hollywood has also let the world know that it will not remain silent when it comes to activism. At last night’s SAG awards, stars including Ashton Kutcher and Kerry Washington spoke out against the immigration ban and highlighted diversity in the entertainment industry.

Our nation is no stranger to protests in support of democracy, however, the active roles that social media and Hollywood’s biggest names have taken on in support of the causes they believe in has created new platforms for healthy discourse. We are continued to be inspired and empowered by the individuals and movements occurring around the world! It’s time for us to embrace our differences, come together, more united than ever, as we do at our diverse Cashmere Agency office. This is likely just the beginning of Trump resistance, and its growing more evident than ever before that we the people, are coming TOGETHER. #NoBan #NoWall
