When They See Us Actor Jharrel Jerome Takes Home An Emmy

Bronx native, Jharrel Jerome took home hardware for the Best Actor in a Limited Series for his role as Korey Wise in Netflix’s When They See Us at last night’s 71st Annual Emmy Awards. Created by Ava DuVernay, When They See Us is a four part series based on the real life journey of the now Exonerated Five’s wrongful arrest and conviction of a Central Park rape in 1989. Being able to tell their own story, their own way, Ava and the five men were able to properly shift public perception and highlight the importance of people of color creating their own narratives.

One of the five, Raymond Santana, sent a tweet to Ava in 2015 asking that she create a film based on their experiences. Ava listened and the result was a four part series that broke Netflix streaming records and allowed the wrongfully convicted men to finally tell their story 30 years after the incident in Central Park that would forever change their lives.
