Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day
After yesterday’s school shooting at UCLA, gun violence has once again become a harrowing, hot-button issue in the media— and the timing is spookily appropriate. Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, an awareness campaign established to end gun violence once and for all, while also honoring those who have fallen in its name.
The campaign is the brainchild of Wear Orange, an organization founded in honor of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old student in Chicago, who’s life was cut short in 2013. From Amy Schumer to Spike Lee, celebrities nationwide have pledged to #WearOrange across social media, donning a color traditionally associated with safety by hunters in the woods, to show their support.
In the past, Cashmere has worked extensively with The League of Young Voters to create No Guns Allowed, an anti-gun violence campaign which grew in the aftermath of the Michael Brown shootings in 2014. We continue to encourage our communities to galvanize and take a stand against gun violence, both locally and digitally.
