Thoughts on Tech: Instagram Eclipses Twitter On Mobile

Twitter was officially launched in 2006, with Instagram hitting the market 4 years later in 2010. It was thought that Instagram would just be a useful addition to the social media space, creating its own niche in photo-sharing, and that sites like Facebook and Twitter would still claim much higher user bases. Throughout the years, Twitter has always had a strong lead on Instagram, offering more opportunity for brands and celebrities to share info and engage with users. After Facebook acquired the photo-sharing app in 2012, there were obvious advantages that Instagram gained that would help accelerate its growth. The photos were featured prominently on Facebook feeds, opening its exposure to an audience over a billion people.Yesterday, Instagram announced on their blog that they had reached the 300 million user mark on mobile, surpassing the current mobile user base of Twitter. As the social media industry continues to change, and new platforms popping up constantly, we all know Instagram will only continue to increase in popularity and dominance.- Kyle (@kyledineen)
