The Academy Addresses Diversity Issue

academy-new-members-2016-diversitySince the Internet unleashed #OscarsSoWhite earlier this year, Hollywood has been making more of an effort to introduce diversity into an industry that has been criticized for being too homogenous. On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited a new class of diverse members to join the organization. The new record-size class, which includes the likes of Idris Elba, America Ferrera, and Nate Parker, consists of 683 invitees, 46% female and 41% people of color.By 2020, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and CEO Dawn Hudson hope to double the number of women and minorities in the organization.“It’s going to be a long slog,” says Pete Hammond of Deadline.com. “But this could affect actual Oscar votes even this year. We don’t want to see #OscarsSoWhiteIII, but ultimately it’s a democracy and it's up to the individual Academy members.”
