Skateistan 3.31.13 Recap

On Easter Sunday, 3.31.13, artists, activists, and the skate community came together for an art benefit to raise money and awareness for Skateistan. The Benefit show was produced by Sowaila Zada and Antoinette Cardenas of Social.Experiment, and curated by the community alongside SIMJEE TEXTOR.The event was hosted at NOMAD Gallery, a printmaking studio and art compound located in Northeast Los Angeles’s Frogtown. Participating artists included Chris Pastras, Retna, Tim Kerr, Shepard Fairey, Clint Peterson, Chad Muska, Alia Penner, Deedee Cheriel, Skullphone, Meena Saifi, Rick Robinson, Geoff Moore, Jason Gillis, Dave McFarland, a Chris Johanson & Barry Mcgee signed deck, Tony Hawk, Philip Salick, Amy Jo Diaz, Daniel Gibson, ABCNT,  Drew Bienemann & Aaron Thomas, Annie Madison, Kube, Patch Davis & No Shane, Mecca Collective, Benjamin Scharf, A1one, Emmerich Konrad, Chase and others.The day included  interactive installations throughout the space: from the Elisa "Sol" Garcia's Imix bookshop and a meditation pyramid to  Azul 213's The PEACE Photo Project.  Music from Embassy: DJ Ana Calderon and Dave Orlando curated the sounds and courtyard food and drinks were provided by Frey Wines, Golden Road Brewing Company, and The Hungry Nomad food truck.Check out some photos of the event by Shannon Cottrell for LA Weekly (to view all photos visit LA Weekly).
