Serial is Back... Sarah Koenig Examines Story of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

The hit podcast Serial from This American Life is back for season 2! This is a follow up to the hit first season, where host Sarah Koenig researched the story of Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee, a murder mystery from 1999 outside the city of Baltimore. Season 2 focuses on the story of US Army Sgt.Bowe Bergdahl, a prisoner of war in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2014.Bergdahl mysteriously disappeared from his post in Southern Afghanistan in 2009, was captured by the Taliban in the desert, and became a prisoner for the next 5 years. He was released in March 2014 in exchange for 5 detainees from Guantanamo Bay, an order directly from President Obama. Since his release, there have been mixed emotion from the military and the general public about the nature of his disappearance, and whether he deserted his post and his fellow soldiers. The US Army has also pressed charges of "desertion" and "misbehavior in the presence of the enemy". The case is still pending and the exact details of those 5 years are still unknown, so there is a story to be told and info to be uncovered.Filmmaker Mark Boal decided to reach out to Bergdahl to get his side of the story, in hopes of writing a film about the events and what exactly happened. The movie cannot be made until the court preceding has finished, but he recorded over 25 hours of phone interviews with the Sergeant. This season of Serial dives into this interview recording, examines the story from multiple perspectives, and adds new information from those involved, from the soldiers to the Taliban.Listen to episode 1 "DUSTWUN" on iTunes, Pandora, or on the Serial website. Was he truly a prisoner of war, or did he desert his fellow soldiers? Hopefully we will find out more as the season continues!
