HBD Prince

As the resident Prince expert of the office, I was called upon to give a few words in commemoration of Prince’s birthday today.I can’t exactly pinpoint the genesis of my Prince fandom. As a child of the 80’s, I grew with the Holy Trinity of 80’s Music Gods: Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince. MJ was the man with the cool moves. Madonna was the hot, blonde bombshell who broke the mold of female pop stars. But Prince, he was a different kind of entertainer all together. When I learned that he not only sung, but wrote, produced, and played his own music— truly, a one-man band— I could not help but become enthralled at the most gifted singer/songwriter/musician of the 20th century. I joined the #PurpleArmy. If I were to do an inventory, I'd estimate that I have collected over 3,000 released, unreleased, and live performance Prince MP3s (as well as MP3s from associated acts), 25 out of his 36 released albums on CD, and 32 live performance videos. I am a Prince fan. I’ll proudly admit that I’m a Stan for that “that skinny motherfucker with the high voice.” To commemorate this day, do yourself a favor and watch two of his most incredible live concerts."4 Those of U on Valium" is a rehearsal of his awesome 1987 Sign O’ the Times tour. With a new band that boasted one of the baddest drummers ever (Sheila E.), Prince tears down the house with new rendition of music off of what many call his greatest album. The Lovesexy Live show from 1988 is my personal favorite concert. The man dances, sings, and plays guitar and piano for some of his most beloved songs. He also underwent a spiritual renaissance during this period in his life. Just try and watch his performance of "Anna Stesia" and not be moved. But if you just want to get a quick Prince fix, my recommendation for a good song you've probably never heard before, is "D.M.S.R.," 8:17 seconds of pure funk. Turn the volume up high and enjoy. #RIPPRINCED.M.S.R.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tg_yrtDqVI4 Those of U on Valiumhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TePPx0HRdH8Lovesexy Live ’88https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtrGB76NFHk
