Our Recap of The Billboard Music Awards

Last night's Billboard Music Awards was filled with cheesy promos and fake smiles, but in between the lip service emerged some seriously moving and impressive performances from the heavy hitters in the music industry. This year's R&B sensation, The Weeknd, came out on top with the most wins, claiming a whopping 8 awards. His winning streak began early in the show, when he won the first prize of the night, Top Hot 100 Artist of the year, which he dedicated to Prince. Adele also cleaned up last night, earning herself 5 total wins. Dr. Luke's label Kemosabe initially granted Kesha permission to perform at the BBMAs, then changed its mind, then finally relented when the singer denied the rumor that her performance would address her legal battles with Luke and his imprint. Rolling Stone states: "The standing ovation she received – a long overdue moment of dignity for an artist whose musical dreams became real-world nightmares – was anything but obligatory." Eat your heart out, Dr. Luke.Madonna and Stevie Wonder lead a "Purple Rain" sing-along:Although fans expressed complaints about the modesty of the tribute, the performance was certainly emotional. BET capitalized on the time to tweet out a promo of their upcoming tribute, implying it will be much grander. After a heartfelt Questlove speech, Madonna showed up sporting a silver suit and a Prince-like ruffled shirt, sitting atop a rotating purple throne. Questlove posted some tweets of his own defending the performance.
