Banksy Immortalizes Steve Jobs in Refugee Camp
Renowned street artist Banksy takes a stand on the Syrian refugee crisis with graffiti pieces that have popped up overnight on the streets of a refugee camp in Calais, France. The main mural depicts Apple visionary Steve Jobs carrying an early Apple computer with his belongings slung over his shoulder in a bag.Banksy has issued a public statement on his piece: “We’re often led to believe migration is a drain on the country’s resources, but Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian migrant. Apple is the world’s most profitable company, it pays over $7 billion a year in taxes - and it only exists because they allowed in a young man from Homs.”The Syrian refugee crisis is a hot-button issue that continues to polarize an already bipartisan American nation— and the world. But Banksy’s piece puts a human face, one that is universally recognized and lauded, to something that may otherwise feel very far removed from us.
