Ava DuVernay Is Recognized As A Voice Of Influence

Riding high off the success of her amazing, powerful Netflix docu-series When They See Us, director and visionary Ava DuVernay has yet another accomplishment to celebrate. The award-winning director will be given the prestigious PEN America’s Voice of Influence award. PEN America is the foremost non-profit organization dedicated to poets, essayists, and novelists. PEN has sat at the intersection of literature and human rights to protect expression in the United States, and worldwide, for more 97 years.

Ava’s work has consistently highlighted the journey of African-Americans, shining a light on stories that deserve to be told by the people living the experiences. As a filmmaker, Ava was the first African-American to win Best Director at Sundance for her feature film Middle of Nowhere.
