Black Panther Breaks The Box Office

This weekend marked a cultural moment in the history of filmmaking.

Black Panther, one of the most highly-anticipated films of the past few years, opened to massive box office numbers that broke numerous records for a premiere weekend.

The Disney and Marvel property brought in an estimated $235M in North America and $360M worldwide, smashing expected opening weekend numbers and becoming the 2nd largest opening of all time for a Marvel movie. These are numbers usually seen with major summer blockbuster releases, so it’s phenomenal that Black Panther just became the largest February release in history, and the 5th largest all time in North America.

More importantly, Black Panther now boasts the largest opening gross of any film directed by an African American.

Cashmere sends a heartfelt congratulations to our friend Ryan Coogler and the film’s cast for such an amazing feat, but it was no surprise to us that Black Panther would impact the culture in such a huge way. Fans from around the world flocked to the theaters this weekend dressed in traditional African attire—singing and chanting throughout the movie to celebrate this important occasion.

It was also a special moment in filmmaking history, as it marked one of the first opportunities for African American youth to see themselves on screen as superheroes, with a cast that brought power and grace to their roles. “Hollywood is lifting us up,” writes CNN’s Van Jones. “This film is a Godsend that will lift the self-esteem of black children in the U.S. and around the world for a long time.”

And we wanted everyone to see it. So Cashmere teamed up with Snoop Dogg, Will.I.Am, and IMAX to host a series of community screenings this weekend in Los Angeles. 300+ kids were invited this past Sunday to a free screening of Black Panther, with an appearance from Snoop Dogg and a VR experience donated by: “Black Eyed Peas Presents: Masters of the Sun.” Free food, games and a day of celebration followed!
